“I was going to offer my services for an office, if you needed me.” - Darlene G. Anderson NMSSAMT Sapphire Service Award (1961- 2008)
The New Mexico State Society of AMT is deeply saddened by the passing away of Darlene G. Anderson in October 2008. Darlene actively and faithfully served AMT and the state society from 1961 to 2008. Without her and her colleagues who established the NMSSAMT in mid-1970, the society wouldn’t be here today. Although she missed the Fall Meeting on September 20, 2008, the state society recognized her and sent her the “Sapphire Service Award” certificate in appreciation of her 47 years of service. Her commitment to the state society was evidently shown in a card dated October 20, 1997, where she wrote:
Dear Deborah and all AMT friends, A few lines to let you know I’m still among the living, at home now recuperating from surgery…I wanted to come over, but wasn’t up to getting in and out of vehicles or had no one to drive me. I was going to offer my services for an office, if you needed me. How did the meeting go? Did you have a good crowd? Who are the new officers? ...You are all in my thoughts. How is Barbara doing? Love, Darlene.
She served AMT as the Central District Co-Councilor for 10 years, from 1966 to 1976. She was a journal editor from 1979 to 1981. She was president of NMSSAMT for 2 terms, 1983-1984 and 1985-1986. Prior to becoming the president, she was a board member and vice president in 1982 and 1983. She continued to serve as secretary from 1987 to 1993. The AMT Board of Directors presented her with a plaque of appreciation in 1983 for promoting the Arts and Crafts Exhibit booth on several AMT national conventions. Among her awards include: Distinguished Achievement Award in 1966, Exceptional Merit Award in 1969, State Society Outstanding Award in 1970, and Order of the Golden Microscope in 1984. Darlene graduated cum laude from the Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia in September 1949. Her first job was in Des Moines, IA. She moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1958 and worked at the Lovelace Clinic doing laboratory and x-ray procedures. It was while working at the doctors’ clinic when she became acquainted with several AMT-certified laboratory technologists who encouraged her to challenge the AMT exams. Darlene passed the test and became registered on January 1, 1961 with a registry # 7839. She later went to the VA Hospital where she worked for about 20 years until her retirement in January 1982. Darlene was actively involved in Rainbow Girls and also helped the Boy Scouts because of her 3 sons. She served as a volunteer at the Sierra Vista Hospital Auxiliary, and as secretary of the Lakeside Community Church for 10 years. She was elected as Chapter Woman of the Year in 1981 when she was an active member of El Segundo Chapter- a charter member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Darlene will be missed not just by her family but by her friends and all who knew her. She served her profession with great dedication, loyalty and excellence. Let us remember her in our thoughts and prayers.
